A my didn’t think she would have too much trouble finding the place where she was supposed to meet Andy. The island wasn’t that big, and she could eliminate the beach closest to the girls’ cabins, since there was no coral reef there. She would just go around the shoreline and look.

What she hadn’t counted on was finding another Amy sneaking out of a cabin at the same time she was leaving hers. They were both surprised to see each other.

The yellow-streaked Amy, Number One, spoke first. “What are you doing?”

“I’m going for a walk,” Amy replied quickly. “I couldn’t sleep.” It sounded fake, but she couldn’t come up with anything more convincing. “What are you doing?”

“Taking a walk,” One said, but she didn’t sound any more natural than Amy had.

Amy tried to look nonchalant as One kept pace with her, and they both headed down to the beach. She was pretty sure One had been among the group at the New York hospital, but she couldn’t recall having had any clear impressions of her during that time.

“It’s a nice night,” Amy ventured.

“Yes,” One said. “Sort of, I don’t know, romantic.”

Amy glanced at her sharply. Could One know about her plans with Andy? She supposed it was possible that the girl had overheard them in the labyrinth. Was she planning to stick by Amy’s side, to prevent any real meeting or any significant conversation from taking place?

They walked along the shore together. Every time Amy sneaked a peek at One, she realized that One was taking peeks at her. Amy was certain they were having identical thoughts. The air around them was thick with distrust.

Then, out of the corner of her eye, Amy glimpsed blond hair around the bend in the shoreline. The coral reef must be around there somewhere. Now if only she could shake off the other girl.

Andy was standing on a pier, his back to them, looking out in the opposite direction. He must have heard footsteps, because he turned around with a big smile on his face. But the smile disappeared when he realized that the girl he was waiting for wasn’t alone.

Amy was disappointed too. Ever since knowing the boys were on the island, she’d been waiting for this moment, for the time when they could be together, alone, to talk and plan and … kiss. But it wasn’t going to happen tonight, not with One right here by her side. She wouldn’t be touching Andy’s cheek, or running her fingers through his hair, with its green streak … wait a minute. Her Andy’s streak was the same color as hers—purple.

That was when she noticed the disappointment on the face of Number One. And it hit her.

“Are you meeting him?” she asked One point-blank.

One was clearly nervous. “Don’t tell Cindy, okay?” she pleaded. “I don’t think we’re supposed to do this. I mean, they’re the enemy, right?”

“I’m not so sure about that,” Amy murmured, but this wasn’t really the time to discuss the boy clones.

“We met in the labyrinth,” One confided in her.
